Rules

To determine the top performing country or nation in (Miss & Teen) pageants, we have two ways in determining it. These are as follows:

  • Pageant Olympics - In this way, we are ranking the nations according to Olympic medal tallying.
  • Country of the Year - This is a little bit complicated as it considers the participation of countries, the weight of the pageant and the awards given by the pageant itself.

I. Pageant Olympics
Like in the Olympic Games, nations are tallied by the number of Gold-Silver-Bronze medals gathered. But in our case, we are dealing with the pageant designations: Title - 1st Runner Up - 2nd Runner Up - 3rd Runner Up - 4th Runner Up - 5th Runner Up - Semi Finalist - Participation.

Example of Pageant Olympic Tallying
Legend:
  • Title - Winner of the pageant
  • 1st RU - First Runner-Up
  • 2nd RU - Second Runner-Up
  • 3rd RU - Third Runner-Up
  • 4th RU - Fourth Runner-Up
  • Semi - Semi Finalist or The first cut of the pageant (Top 20, Top 16 or Top 15)
  • Part - Participation (Nation did not place but participate in the pageant)
  • Total - Total number of pageants a nation participated

II. Country of the Year

Country of the year is a little bit complicated but more accurate in determining the top performing nations.

In this category, we will consider many things in a particular pageant. The participation of countries, the weight of the pageant and the awards given are considered.

Also, we formulated an equation so that those newly born pageants and those pioneering or major pageants will be equally treated in our computation.

Total Score = Edition/Participation + Placement + Awards

Edition/Participation score. This is the number of edition the pageant is being held. This is considered as to give importance of how long the pageant is running. For example, Miss World 2010 was in its 60th edition. Therefore, the country that participated in Miss World 2010 gets 60 points. Pageant edition is considered the weight of a pageant.

Placement score. The number of delegates in a particular pageant plays an important role in determining the placement score. And here are the breakdowns:

Title Holder/Winner = 100% x Number of delegates in a particular pageant

Runner Ups/Top 5 = 60% x Number of delegates in a particular pageant

Top 10  or 2nd Cut = 30% x Number of delegates in a particular pageant
Top 15 /Top 20 (1st cut)  = 25% x Number of delegates in a particular pageant
Continental Awards = 20%  x Number of delegates in a particular pageant (* Revised starting January 2016)

For example, Miss World 2010 had 115 delegates. And Miss Venezuela was crowned 2nd Runner-Up. Therefore, Venezuela will accumulate a score of 69 points.

Calculation: 60%  x  115 =  69 points

Award Score. This varies according to major and minor awards. And again, the number of delegates of a particular pageant plays an important role. (Revised: January 2018)
Major Awards = 15%  x  Number of delegates in a particular pageant
Minor Awards/Runner Ups of Major Award = 10%  x  Number of delegates in a particular pageant
Runner Ups of Minor Awards = 3%  x  Number of delegates in a particular pageant
We only considered 3 Major awards. These are Miss Photogenic, Miss Friendship or Congeniality and Best National Costume. These awards are the most common awards given in every pageant and not included in the criteria of selecting the semi-finalists. The "Best in Swimsuit" and "Best Evening Gown" awards are not considered as Major Awards in our system. Since these two awards are basically part of the criteria where judges put scores and select the semi-finalists in every pageant. And in our formula, semi-finalists are given a certain percentage scores in the computation. To avoid duplication of merits, we make it as minor award where it is given 10%.
For example, let's say Miss Venezuela was awarded Miss Photogenic. Therefore, Venezuela will have an accumulated score of 17.25 points.

Calculation: 15%  x  115 =  17.25 points
And we can now compute the total score of Venezuela in Miss World 2010...
Total score =  Edition/Participation + Placement + Awards
Total score =  60 points + 69 points + 17.25 points
Total score =  146.25 points
This is only in Miss World 2010 for Venezuela. We will add all the scores of Venezuela in all pageants it participated for the year 2010. Like the scores in Miss Universe, Miss Earth and etc. So goes with other countries.
* In case Continental Queen Awards are given, a contestant will accumulate continental points if she did not placed in the 1st cut of semi-finalists. This is to avoid duplication of merits. Semi-finalists are already given points equivalent of 30% of the number of contestants in a pageant.
With all scores computed for all countries for all pageants, we will add it together to come up with the "Over-All Score". And then we can determine the top performing nations for all legitimate pageants in a year.
Over-All Score = Miss World Score + Miss Earth Score + Miss Universe + ...
Number of delegates in a particular pageant plays a major role in every pageant. It is considered the strength of the pageant. It is an indication of how supportive countries in a pageant by joining it. That is why we use it as index in our computations.
After all scores are computed for all countries/territories for all pageants, the nation with the highest over-all score will be declared "Country of the Year".
Notes:
1.1 Regional pageants are now included in our tally starting January 2024. (Revised: January 10, 2024)
1.2 Pageant winners based on online voting are NOT included in our tally boards (Pageant Olympics and Country of the Year).
1.3 Pageants for married women such as Mrs. World or Grandma Universe & Rainbow Pageants are also not included in our tally board.
1.4 In case of no designation (For example in a Top 5 finalists), only the Title winner, 1st and 2nd Runners Up were given a designated place, the other two remaining finalists will assume the role of 3rd Runner Up in our tally board.
1.5 A pageant with many categories such as Miss/Adult, Teen, Petite etc and has winner for each categories BUT has a Grand Winner for the entire pageant itself, we will considered the Grand Winner as the highest title/designation in our tally and winners from the Miss & Teen categories will be considered runner-up (in Pageant Olympics). -
